Fancy, Glittery & Fun – JAI 284

Good morning! It’s a Just Add Ink share today!

The challenge this week for JAI 284 was a card with a fancy fold. There are some gorgeous creations from the Design Team and lots of great inspiration if you want to make something other than a standard C6 card.

My Centre-Step Fancy Fold creation uses a tutorial by one of the lovely JAI Design Team members – Di Barnes (Colour Me Happy). I had the pleasure of meeting Di at the South Pacific convention earlier in the year and she was so lovely to spend time with. Plus, she’s crazy talented and very generous with sharing full tutorials and instructions for what she makes.

This card started with a fleeting idea that I could combine a card and gift in one project. I wanted to attach these sparkly butterfly clips in a way that they were part of the overall creation.

In the end, they ended up being the centrepieces!!! and I love the way it turned out. The 3-D nature of the centre-step card is perfect for displaying the hair clips.

Did you know you can create Stampin’ Up! Glimmer Paper to match the tones available in the colour collections? And it’s easy!

Simply take Dazzling Diamonds Glimmer Paper, a sponge dauber and your ink colour of choice and apply the ink to the glimmer paper. The more ink you apply, the deeper the colour will be.

Using this technique, you’ll be able to create glimmer paper to match all your sparkly projects! Yay! Kelly x

Try a Technique – Inked Up Embossing Folders

As you know, there are so many clever techniques out there for making ‘wow’ cards. I have tried inking embossing folders before, but not for a while, so it was almost like a new ‘wow’ moment for me.

I’ve combined my technique fun with the Just Add Ink inspiration challenge (JAI261). Don’t you just love the colours in the theme!?!

This is my card:

The Technique: The background is made by inking up the inside of the embossing folder (top or bottom depending on what you want inky and what you want uninked) with a brayer and ink from a classic stamp pad. I used the Spring Flowers TIEF and the gorgeous *soon-to-be-released* in-colour Tip Top Taupe. It took me a bit of practice (Alexa is going to love it when she finds the rejects on her craft table!) but I got there eventually. I found I got the best finish when I put the embossing folder through the big shot sideways (rather than with the fold first, rotate 90 degrees so it goes through long side first). It’s a bit of a squeeze but it fits!

Although the inspiration photo is all leaves, when I first saw the cushion in the picture I thought it was a tree. And then I couldn’t shake it – great first impression! I love all the texture and layers in this card. And the colours! The mix of blues, white & taupe is just divine. Thanks JAI!!! Kelly x

Minibeast Birthday for a Minibeast Toddler!

Cam recenty turned 2 and celebrated with a minibeast themed party. What a great theme for this age group!

So, this card & curvy keepsake box set are inspired by all things mini & beast like – much like the little people who run our lives!!!

Do you remember these bug catchers from your childhood? We used to fill ours with slaters (the tamest of the creepy crawlies), throw in some grass and then forget about them – whoops!

This spider is cuter than any I’ve ever found in the garden.

The Octonauts visit in GUP-A (plus a GUP-A Curvy Keepsake Box)

Another weekend, and another birthday party! Kirill is celebrating turning 4 today with an Octonauts themed party. I have previously made a card featuring Octonauts punch art. During the Octonauts re-creation, I realised they weren’t as involved as they seemed at the time, so I have updated the original post to include instructions.

This time around, I have taken the Octonauts theme one step further and added Captain Barnacle’s underwater vehicle – GUP-A. This post is full of photos, which I hope will help you to make your own Octonauts & GUP-A. Note: this card is 6″ square.

And if you look closely, you can see GUP-A has a 3D light!

JAI 241 – Sketch Challenge {Flower Patch DSP}

I’m not a huge fan of orange hues… but I do love orange and purple together. So, for this creation, I’ve teamed up Tangelo Twist & Blackberry Bliss with Strawberry Slush & Wild Wasabi to make a Flower Patch stamped DSP / patterned paper. The stamps in Flower Patch are so cute and because of their size & diversity, they make great background stamps.

The measurements for the panels are 1-1/8″ x 5-3/8″ on a mat that measures 3-7/8″ x 5-5/8″ and then mounted onto a C6 card [with a top fold, which I’m totally in love with at the moment]. You could use custom made DSP like I did, ready-to-go DSP, a background stamp (like I Love Lace or Hardwood), embossed cardstock or a solid colour. So many options for a very versatile sketch. My Bokeh Needs More Practice!

I’m slowly working my way through my L-O-N-G list of Pinterest ‘must try’ pins. This is one of those – I wanted to try the Bokeh technique.

In photography, bokeh is the aesthetic quality of the blur produced in the out-of-focus parts of an image produced by a lens. Bokeh has been defined as “the way the lens renders out-of-focus points of light” (trusty Wikipedia).

In stamping, bokeh is a patterned or watercolour type background with white highlights as the focus – attempting to reproduce the dappled light effect of the photographic bokeh.

Now, I’m pretty sure I haven’t nailed it first time around (though I love the final product) and am looking forward to trying again. It was a fun technique with a beautiful finish.

This will be my last post for a short while, while I have a break from stamping, blogging & the computer! I will return re-energised, with more projects in a couple of weeks. Kelly x

Just Add some Mojo!

I’ve been posting lots lately – I don’t think I can keep this pace up forever, but I’ve got lots to show you at the moment! Creativity is very temperamental. Sometimes you’re inspired and sometimes you’re not. At the moment my inspiration is coming from *everywhere* – specific customer requests, sketches, Pinterest, people I know, lovely new products… So, I’m embracing it and spending lots of time at the craft table.

This project was inpisred by the latest “Just Add Ink” sketch and a desperate desire to use my new Four Feathers & matching framelits set from the Holiday Catalogue. I made two versions and can’t decide which one I like best – I’m leaning towards the first one with the ombre feathers floating down. 3 big, 3 small and a wayward one down the bottom. Feathers are very ‘on trend’ at the moment but like most trends I think you either love them or hate them. I’m loving them! Kelly x

Hubby & I celebrate our anniversary today. We choose to celebrate “getting together” rather than our wedding anniversary, mostly because Miss A came along on our 2nd wedding anniversary and hijacked our day. So, we’ve kept our original anniversary date. Not that an anniversary date means much different – I didn’t marry the king of romance – but I think it’s still nice to reflect on our time together. We certainly have some wonderful memories and so many more to make.

I was “inkspired” to create a card for Mr Papercraft using the sketch Teneale Williams provided for her team’s blog hop challenge (start the hop here at Teneale’s blog to see what they created using the sketch). Then I was on a roll with the Seasonally Scattered greetings, so I did all three. Lots of things make card making easier including sketches, themes & inspiration. And great products. Happy ‘us’ day Mr Kent. Love Mrs Kelly x

Cheers! Nothing spells out celebration like champagne – bubbles! This is another great Pinterest find. The original instructions are here (in German) with a great picture tutorial that will get you over the language barrier.

A little scoring, an envelope punch board & some pretty embellishments. The end result is a fabulous gift for someone who has something to celebrate – in this case a special lady who is turning 21. I love gift giving – don’t you?! Kelly x
