Framed Magnolia Artwork

Every month I teach a class with lovely ladies in my local area.  It’s always fun and I always walk away feeling so happy to have Stampin’ Up!.  I’ve met so many wonderful people and spent so many wonderful hours being creative.

One of my class members – Robyn – fell in love with the framed magnolia artwork on page 39 of the Annual Catalogue and asked if we could create one.  So, this off the page creation became our subject matter for class this morning.  Thanks for the brilliant suggestion Robyn – it was so much fun!

The large magnolia flowers are made using the Hot Air Balloon Builder punch and the Magnolia Memory Dies.  Click here to view Stampin’ Up!’s tutorial on making magnolia flowers.

I made one before the class as a sample – sticking pretty close to the catalogue in terms of number of flowers.

The frame is 8″ x 10″ from Kmart (click here to view) with a 6″ x 8″ window.  The DSP is 6″ x 9-3/4″ so you’ll the backing for 2 frames from a piece of 12″x12″ DSP.

This version has 2 large flowers – made with magnolia & hot air balloon pieces, 2 medium flowers – made with three layers of magnolia dies and 1 small flower – made with two layers of magnolia dies.

The flower petals are sponged with So Saffron ink before adhering with Liquid Multipurpose Glue.  The centres are cut using So Saffron cardstock and sponged using So Saffron ink for the larger centre and Crumb Cake for the smaller centre.

I’m lucky to have a garden of fallen twigs at my disposal, which came in very handy for this project.  If you don’t have organic sticks to be able to use, craft stores may have artificial materials that can be used for branches.

Because no two twigs are the same when they come from the garden, all of our frames made in class had their own unique style.  This was also the case for the magnolia blooms which took on their own style depending on how they were layered & shaped.  The variety was amazing and created beautiful one-of-a-kind framed artworks.

Such an incredible piece of artwork made with paper.  The use of twigs from the garden definitely add some nice texture.

This would make a great girls night in!  A few of your favourite beverages and some pretty magnolias!  If you ever see something on my blog (or in the catalogue) that you’d like to make, don’t hesitate to ask me!
