Happy Friday 13th!
In fitting with “black Friday”, our theme for tonight’s Paper Adventures team hop is “BLACK”.
We are welcoming Sue Plote from the US as our guest designer this week. Sue is fabulous and we’re delighted to have her hopping with us.
There’s a full list of participants at the bottom of this post – just in case of broken links.
You are currently with Kelly Kent in Bunbury, Western Australia.
Last month, I had the privilege of hosting a retreat day for demonstrators local to my area. You can read more about it here.
One of the cards I made on the day was designed by Claire Oliffe using the Black Ice technique. I hadn’t tried this before – and totally loved it!!!
Claire provided us with instructions based on Melissa Kerman’s you tube tutorial. See it here.
I used the Hanging Garden stamp set for my two Black Ice cards.
This is yet another technique that looks complicated but is so easy when you have the tools & instructions!
For my first card, I used one of the hanging baskets. I made the Black Ice segment on Silver Foil first and then cut it out using a circle framelit.
The hardest thing about these cards was getting photos that show how fun they look once finished!
You’ll need:
- Foil in a colour of your choice
- StazOn Jet Black Ink
- Stamp set
- Heat tool
- Versamark
- Clear embossing powder.
StazOn ink was retired from our range, but I’m excited to be able to share that we’ll be seeing it back again from 1st June 2018.
In (very) simple terms, to get the black ice effect, the steps are:
- Drag the StazOn pad down the foil (and back up again) to create some distressing
- Stamp your images on the foil in StazOn
- Dry with your heat tool on setting 1 (or wait for it to dry)
- Drag the Versamark pad down the foil, cover with clear embossing powder and melt with your heat tool on setting 2
Easy – right???
I loved the first card so much I made another one using a larger panel for the Black Ice technique with all the hanging baskets.
This card used Champagne Foil – you can use any colour foil. It’s the slippery surface which allows for the distressing that gives you the effect.
I really love the darker edges you get when using a whole piece of foil (I cut the edges off for the first card).
This is a technique you’re going to want to try!!!
If you live in the Bunbury area and would like a guided tutorial, we can arrange a technique workshop just for you!
Next up on the Paper Adventures team hop is our guest designer – Sue Plote
Thanks for joining us!

I really must try this technique – the effect is so cool. These are lovely, so soft and pretty for a “black” theme!
Oh snap Kelly!
I loved trying this technique, I need some more practice but it’s a fun technique especially when the embossing powder comes to life! I didn’t use stazon I used archival instead, I’ll have to try using stazon next time! Love your cards x
Wow so creative, I love them all. Joanne told me about this technique but I hadn’t really seen it apart from now. Such a great idea thanks for the inspiration
Beautiful cards Mrs Papercraft! Such a lovely combination of soft colours with the striking black. If there’s heat embossing to do for this technique I’m putting it in the too hard basket (LOL) 😉
