Putting Together The Birthday Pieces

The Stylized Birthday stamp was an instant love for me when I saw the new catalogue.  Sometimes you just need a BIG birthday stamp right in the middle of the white space!

It says it all really and that font is oh so pretty!  We know I’m a font nerd!

Putting Together The Birthday Pieces - Stylized Birthday stamp & Floral Boutique DSP. Kelly Kent - mypapercraftjourney.com

As I was making this card, I realised that often the same card design has so many options for how it can be put together.  This is never more apparent than in a card class where I pre-cut the pieces and participants shape their own creation & add their own touch by changing placement, layout & style….

Turn a piece of cardstock to the diagonal and the card has a whole different look.

Flip the DSP over & the style is different.

Move the pieces around and the layout changes.

Individualisation and creative opportunities are some of the things I love most about handmade designs.  No 2 are ever the same (even if you intended for them to be)!  And why would you want them to be?  That’s what printed & machine generated cards are for.

We have the personal touch.  Embrace the differences in your cards and play with the pieces.  The change might delight you!  Kelly x

PS, this card was for my upline’s birthday.  Which design do you think I sent???

Magical Birthday Fairy Slider Card

Doesn’t this sweet little fairy just look like she’s flying!  So, she was the perfect fit for one of those slider cards I promised.

Magical Birthday Fairy Slider Card. Kelly Kent - mypapercraftjourney.com.

Slider cards are so easy to make, especially when you’ve got the Sliding Star Framelits & Foam Adhesive Strips on your desk!

Simply cut a piece of cardstock that is smaller than your card front.  Use one of the slider pieces to create a pathway for your object to move along/around.  Adhere to your card base with foam strips and then using washers/coins/similar (I had to use two piece of thick cardboard I cut myself because all the round shiny things I could find were too big to hide behind my fairy!), place one under the pathway, add foam strip (or a dimensional) and then add the other on top.  Finish with your movable image (like a fairy).  Easy as punch (or framelit…. bad stamping joke!).

Magical Birthday Fairy Slider Card. Kelly Kent - mypapercraftjourney.com.

Those fairies are just way too cute!!!

My photography doesn’t share the secret – but I will.  This card is full of Wink of Stella.  It’s a fairy’s best friend!!!  Kelly x

Simply Stunning – Serene Scenery DSP!

Have you placed a new catalogue order yet?  Was the Serene Scenery Designer Series Paper Stack in it???

It’s stunning!!!

You really have to see this DSP in person to appreciate how stunning the designs are, but this video does a pretty good job of sharing it’s beauty:

Although I love the reverse side, the photographic images are the highlight of this pack.  I’m saving a couple of them for some ideas I have.

This is a card I made to welcome my newest recruit using three of the photographic designs.

I normally put ‘hello’ on the front of my welcome cards (logically) but thought sunshine worked well with these images.  Sunshine is happiness to me… and happiness is Stampin’ Up!

Sometimes The Colours Are Enough GDP#041

The colours this week for Global Design Project #041 are just up my alley – since I’m totally in love with Sweet Sugarplum!!!

I didn’t want to overdesign this card.  The colours are a good mix between sweet & bold and it was the simple contrast I wanted to showcase.

So, it’s a Clean & Simple (CAS) creation…

GDP#041 - Colour Challenge. Sweet Sugarplum, Whisper White & Night of Navy. Vintage Leaves collage. Kelly Kent - mypapercraftjourney.com.

Watercoloring often ends up with a slightly muted tone of the original colour, so it’s great to create contrast within the card.

This pink leaf pattern was created by stamping the Vintage Leaf onto watercolor paper 5 times in Versamark, covering with clear embossing powder, heat setting and then watercoloring in Sweet Sugarplum with my aquapainter.  The clear embossing ‘resists’ the ink and leaves you with an outline & colour.

The leaves were cut using the coordinating framelit & then stuck to the Shimmery White panel.  Trim the edges, add a sentiment and it’s all done.

Sweet, Sweet Birthday Cupcakes!

Made using the new Sweet Cupcake bundle, this birthday gift set is a gluten-free, dairy-free & calorie-free scrumptious delight!

Sweet Cupcake birthday set - card & bookmark using Sweet Cupcake stamp set, Cupcake Cutouts Framelits, Seaside Embossing Folder. Kelly Kent - mypapercraftjourney.com.

Buy the stamps & framelits as a bundle & save 10%!

There’s 3 steps to the icing & cake wrapper elements which creates a wonderfully 3-D effect.

This cupcake is Blushing Bride, Sweet Sugarplum & Rich Razzleberry with Dazzling Diamonds glitter.

The wrapper/paper (what do you actually call it?) is Soft Suede & Crumb Cake (stamped off for the bottom layer).

Sweet Cupcake stamp set - Blushing Bride, Sweet Sugarplum & Rich Razzleberry with Dazzling Diamonds glitter. Kelly Kent - mypapercraftjourney.com.

Can you spot the other new products I’ve used for this card???

There’s the Layering Circles Framelits, Seaside embossing folder & Classic Label punch.  Oh, and my very favourite Sweet Sugarplum cardstock!!!

Sweet Cupcake Birthday Card using Sweet Cupcake stamp set, Cupcake Cutouts Framelits, Seaside Embossing Folder. Kelly Kent - mypapercraftjourney.com.

Once my card was made, I wanted a little something to pop in the envelope to make it a birthday gift.  And that little something was a bookmark.

I like it when things are all matchy-matchy, so I kept with the Sweet Sugarplum, Blushing Bride & Silver glimmer colour theme.  Plus the same Seaside embossing folder background, but I added the flower from the Sunshine Wishes thinlit set.

Sweet Cupcake Bookmark using Sunshine Wishes Thinlits, Sweet Cupcake stamp set and Seaside Embossing Folder. Kelly Kent - mypapercraftjourney.com.

But no birthday sentiment on this one.  I masked out the ‘you’ on the stamp and just inked up ‘happiness’.  Punched it out with the Classic Label punch and snipped off the ends!

Sometimes it’s the little ‘hacks’ that makes for clever crafting.  Do you have a great tip – leave me a comment & share your genius!

Stamp Review Crew – Flower Shop

Flower Shop banner

Good morning!  It’s cold here (as you would expect during winter!) – what’s the weather like in your part of the world?

Today brings another Stamp Review Crew post and we’re taking you on a Flower Shop journey.  It’s another fabulous coordinating set with a stamps and a matching punch!!!

These hops go around (and around), so if you’re after the full set of inspiration, keeping clicking ‘next’ until you end up back here – or wherever you started.

Maybe you started with Betty over at Kitty Stamps – which means there’s a lot lot of fun to go!

Or maybe you started with Shana’s Stress-Free Stamping and I am your last stop – did you love all the projects???

Or maybe you hopped backwards and I’ve got that all wrong!

Flower Shop prev

No matter which way you go, these hops are so much fun, with lots of talented designers and there’s {ALWAYS} a heap of projects that are on my ‘CASE’ list.

Many thanks to Tanya for her tireless & super proficient organisation of the hops!

This project started for me as soon as I opened my packet of Affectionately Yours DSP.  It contains 2 sheets of 5 double sided designs and 2 sheets of amazingly fancy single sided designs.

My card uses one of the fancy designs.  Although possibly too beautiful to cut up, I wanted to show off the fabulous copper colour that’s new to the Stampin’ Up! range this year.

So, with my big-girl-brave knicks on, I cut the pretty DSP and made a Flower Shop spinner card using the coppery floral DSP & a copper embossed Flower Shop flower.

The beautiful copper embossed flower up close…

Stamp Review Crew - Flower Shop Spinner Card. Affectionately Yours DSP & Cooper Embossing Powder. Kelly Kent - mypapercraftjourney.com.

I’ve used money (2 x 10c pieces) to keep my flower on the circular track – but washers of the same size also work.

image

Many thanks to Cheryl who saved the day by sending me a copper embossed flower to finish my project.  I had it all planned out… but my embossing powder didn’t arrive in time!  I’m thankful for all the lovely stamping friends I’ve made simply by sharing a love of paper.

I wanted to show off the full effect of this card with a video.  This is my first time taking, editing & uploading a video.  It’s super simple, but gives you an idea how the spinner card works.

How to make your own spinner card:

  • Cut a piece of cardstock/DSP to fit your card base (mine is 3-5/8″ x 5-3/8″)
  • Run through the Big Shot with the circle framelit from the Sliding Star set or if you don’t own this, with 2 circle framelits (one large, one small placed where you want your ‘track’)
  • Remove the “O” shape left by the framelits and stick the remaining two pieces (your card front and circle) to your card base using dimensionals or foam tape.
  • Sit a coin/washer under the “O” gap created by your circle and card front.  Attach a dimensional to the coin/washer and place another coin/washer on top.  This will create a fixture that runs around the ‘track’.
  • Attach your flower (or other embellishment) to the top coin/washer with glue dots.

Did you notice the Sliding Star Framelits & Shooting Star stamp set in the new catalogue?  This cute little set lets you make spinner/slider cards with all the hard work done for you.  I’m working on some more spinner cards this week and will share soon!

Until then, keep hopping!  Next stop is Shana!  Kelly x

Hey, hey! It’s Father’s Day (in the US) – JAI#316

Hey, hey!  I know lots of my visitors each day hail from the United States of America.

And today in the US they are celebrating Father’s Day.

So, I thought I’d share in the celebrations with a masculine themed card using some more new products from the catalogue release.

This is my dark & broody motorcycle card using the ‘One Wild Ride’ stamp set.

JAI#316 - Stripes. Masculine birthday card - One Wild Ride stamp set. Kelly Kent - mypapercraftjourney.com.

To tie in with the theme over at Just Add Ink #316 this week, I have accepted Patrice’s challenge to add stripes.

I was so excited to see that Stampin’ Up! have included a diagonal stripe background stamp!!!  Stripes are a great addition to lots of cards and a stamp means they can come in any colour – as many times as you like!  And, like this card – with whatever background cardstock colour you choose!!!

And, don’t fall off your chair… but I’m on a roll with decorating the inside of cards.  Nothing too elaborate, but it definitely adds a nice extra touch to the card.  Next stop…  envelope decoration!

JAI#316 - Stripes. Masculine birthday card (inside) - One Wild Ride stamp set. Kelly Kent - mypapercraftjourney.com.

Another new addition featured in this card is the Basic Black Baker’s Twine – in solid black!!!  There’s 5 new solids colours in the Baker’s Twine range and they are fabulous!  {But then twine is one of my favourite products!}

JAI#316 - Stripes. Masculine birthday card - One Wild Ride stamp set. Kelly Kent - mypapercraftjourney.com.

Hope it’s a very lovely Father’s Day in the US.  Ours is in September, so this card would be a perfect one (minus the birthday sentiment inside) for a motorbike loving Dad – if you are super organised!  Or you can pin for later!  Does anyone craft without Pinterest? Kelly x

One Stop Pinterest Inspiration Stop! #imbringingbirthdaysback

Do you remember the movement Shannon West started to ‘bring birthdays back’?

It’s certainly made me send more of my cards out to friends for their birthday (and other occasions) – which is fabulous!  They love receiving a handmade card and I love making/sending them!

In a wonderful display of thanks and happy birthday wishes, Shannon got almost 1,000 cards for her birthday.  She has uploaded every single one to Pinterest and you can now go and have a looksie.

There is such an array of layouts, stamps, designs, colour combinations & great ideas that I’m labelling it a “One Stop Pinterest Inspiration Stop”!

#imbringingbirthdaysback Pinterest Board

You can see my card second from the right above and a bigger version below (in case you missed it the first time around!)…
