Just Add Ink – Happy #300!!!

Congratulations to the Just Add Ink team who are celebrating 300 challenges and 6 years of awesome fun.  Well done!  With so many challenges on offer and crafters always looking for the next best thing, it’s lovely to see them keep going.  As you know, JAI is my fave weekly challenge.

This week for the big 3-0-0, the inspiration is a sketch (which no matter what I tried wouldn’t put itself into my blog post the right way around!)…

And what an awesome sketch for a special challenge!  The design team creations are very inspiring – you can see them here.

This is my challenge card…

Just Add Ink #300 - Sketch Challenge. Cups & Kettle framelits, silver doily, Happy Happenings stamp set & Going Places DSP. Kelly Kent - mypapercraftjourney.com.

I seem to be all about blues at the moment. I started with the marbled blue DSP from the Going Place stack, which was going to be my kettle.  But when I cut it out, I found I loved the neutral side more – and the card just took off from there!

Just Add Ink #300 - Sketch Challenge. Cups & Kettle framelits, silver doily, Happy Happenings stamp set & Going Places DSP. Kelly Kent - mypapercraftjourney.com.

I snuck in a retired embossing folder (do you still have this lovely pattern in your stash? I can’t part with it!) for the background, a silver doily for my teapot ‘mat’ and a happy birthday sentiment from my newest stamp set to arrive – Happy Happenings.

I just love awesome sentiment sets and this one from the 2015-16 annual catalogue is so cute – I don’t know what took me so long to buy it!

Happy milestone JAI – looking forward to playing along to many more challenges.  Kelly x

My Not-So-Challenging Day…

Today I was child-free, husband-less and totally devoid of all commitments!!!  For some of you, this may not induce hysterical happy dancing – but for me, with a crazy-busy schedule and at least 1 permanent mini-shadow at all times, to have a day with nothing to do other than stamping, I was in heaven!

So, although I didn’t spend the day in pyjamas (I had to do school drop off first to get my day alone!), I did spend it at the craft table – with nothing on my agenda to make other than cards that make me happy.  Cards that I wanted to make rather than from my to-do list of class prep, orders and upcoming birthdays!  Wooo hoooooo!!!

The first card is my Just Add Ink entry for this week, inspired by the challenge photo….

My initial thought was to use Watermelon Wonder in a one-tone card creation….  But it’s just not a colour I love – so I put it back.  What’s the colour you find hardest to use?

Instead, I took the soft pinks, greens & neutrals of the photo to create a sweet macaron card.  I remember Carolina Evans making macarons with the Balloon Builders stamp set when we first got it at OnStage and tucked the idea away for a later date.  They are the perfect accompaniment to the ‘sweet’ sentiment and pastel colours.  I love macarons!!!  And of course, as they are the paper verison, they have received Wink of Stella treatment.

Just Add Ink #299 photo inspiration challenge. Macaron Tower on a watercolour background. Kelly Kent - mypapercraftjourney.com

And because I had the time, I {FINALLY} got the chance to join in for a challenge at the Global Design Project. I’ve been meaning to play along since they started last year!

It was a CASE the designer challenge.  This was the inspiration card by Michelle Last…

And this is my card…

GDP024 - CASEing the Designer. Banner Triple Punch, Gold Butterfly & English Garden DSP. Kelly Kent - mypapercraftjourney.com.

I loved the colours of Michelle’s card (especially the English Garden DSP) and butterfly feature, so kept those elements and used one of my favourite layouts with multiple banner layers.

Add a splash of gold embossing, a little ribbon & trim and the card is finished!

To sentiment or not to sentiment is always a difficult question, but I actually love a sentiment-less card, so with today being a day of absence, I went without.

Alas, my day alone is almost over as school pick-up looms.  Back to late-night stamping – which actually suits me.  Perversely, I am at my most creative between 10pm & midnight!  I’m pretty sure I’m not alone is that.  I wonder what it is about that time of night that leads to the best design work???  Kelly x

Rose Garden – Stained Glass Effect & Hello Chrissie!

Welcome to Stampin’ Up! Chrissie!!!  This card is on it’s way to the newest member of Team Papercraft to say HELLO!

Chrissie is excited to start doing workshops & classes in her local area (northern NSW).  She’s got an incredibly crafty background and so much passion!  So, if you’re in her area and looking for a fresh Stampin’ Up! face, make sure you get in touch with her.

Rose Wonder Stained Glass Window technique. Kelly Kent - mypapercraftjourney.com.

For Chrissie’s card, I used a complementary colours to fill the rose & create a ‘stained glass’ effect with the Rose Garden Thinlits.  It looks amazing.  A little time consuming for the first one, but by using all the pieces from each colour, you can actually create 2 of these in no time at all.

How to create your own stained glass window…

  • Make your outline by cutting the die from a piece of cardstock – I used Basic Black for my outline.  You can discard the middle pieces, but keep the die cut.
  • For the ‘stained glass’, cut the die again using two shades of the same colour – I used Cherry Cobbler & Real Red.  Save these pieces (it’ll be helpful to keep them in rose formation if you can).
  • Using the ‘negative’ cardstock, trace around the border of the rose on a piece of scrap cardstock.  Cut this out to create a backing for your stained glass rose.
  • Apply adhesive to the scrap rose & place the outline piece on top.
  • Then, (working quickly before your adhesive dries if you are using a liquid glue) add the pieces back in to the rose, alternating the two colours.
  • You can also do this for the leaves using two shades of green – I used Old Olive & Pear Pizzazz

You’ll notice I’ve done some creative adaptations to the rose – chopping off the petals it comes with and replacing them with the smaller ones in the set.

Stampin’ Up! is an amazing risk free opportunity.  The only expectation is $440 in sales per quarter – the rest is up to you!

If you think you’d like to try, then take advantage of the great joining deal like Chrissy did.  Your starter kit will be $169 and you’ll get to choose $295 of products, with free shipping and a free business kit.

You can find all the info about joining up here.  If you have more questions, please contact me.  If you’re ready to join – click here to get started.

Botanical Gardens – Cards & Treats from my February classes

As I mentioned in yesterday’s blog post, I’m truly in love with the Botanical Gardens product suite.  And, I’ve been using it lots!  All three classes this month used this range for at least one of their creations.

The ladies all seems to fall in love too with the appropriate amount of ooo’s & ahhh’s coming from the craft table.

I love it’s versatility, the awesome 3D dies and that it matches with 2 of the Sale-A-Bration choices!

We made cards…

Just for You Card using Sale-A-Bration Botanicals For You stamp set, Botanical Builders Framelits and Botanical Blooms stamp set. Kelly Kent - mypapercraftjourney.com.

Thanks card featuring the Botanical Gardens suite: Botanical Builders Framelits, Botanical Gardens DSP, Botanical Blooms stamp set, Botanical Gardens Jewels and Suite Sayings. Kelly Kent - mypapercraftjourney.com.

And a calendar…

2016 Easel-Style Calendar using Botanical Builders Framelits. Kelly Kent - mypapercraftjourney.com.

But my favourite project that all 3 classes made was a little treat box styled on an American sour cream container – or for us Aussies, the shape of a those frozen ice lollies from the 80s.

Thanks to Dawn Griffith for her very helpful tutorial.

Botanical Gardens Treat Boxes (sour cream containers) using Botanical Builders Framelits & Botanical Gardens Vellum. Kelly Kent - mypapercraftjourney.com.

You can either use vellum or DSP to make these cute little boxes.  I used the Botanical Gardens Vellum that you can choose as one of your Sale-A-Bration rewards until 31st March 2016.

Of course you can decorate them any way you like, but how sweet do they look with the Botanical Builders flowers on them?

To make the boxes:

  • start with a piece of vellum that is 4-1/4″ x 5-1/2″
  • put Tape & Tear adhesive on both long sides and one short side
  • remove the tape backing from all sides and with the tape on the side roll the vellum into a cylinder/tube shape so the short sides meet, and you attach the back of the taped short edge to the front of the non-taped edge (Dawn’s video will help if this step doesn’t make sense)
  • squish one end of the box to close
  • fill your box with whatever treats you choose (we used jelly beans)
  • squish the other end of the box at the opposite angle.

They look cute in any colour and lovely in DSP (though I forgot to take pictures of those!).  I wouldn’t recommend cardstock – it’s just not flexible enough.  You can make any size box too – just adjust the measurements for your piece of vellum or DSP.

The March class schedule will be up soon – make sure you check back during the week.  As you can see, we have lots of fun and make lots of fabulous projects!  Kelly x

Happy & Timeless Birthday Wishes

This is a card I made for a gorgeous friend who celebrated her birthday during the week.  It was so lovely I decided we’d make it for today’s class as well!

Happiest Birthday Wishes - Timeless Textures & Watercolor Wishes stamp sets plus Botanical Buildlers Framelits. Kelly Kent - mypapercraftjourney.com.

I had challenged myself to use the Timeless Textures stamp set from the Occasions catalogue.  I love the idea of it but grungy & random stamping isn’t my thing.  I think this layout is a nice compromise!

Meanwhile, I’m totally in love with the Botanical Builders framelits and using them on every card & project that crosses my desk!  In my crafting opinoin, you can never have too much of a good thing – and I can say, without hesitating, that I’m getting {excellent} value for money from my Botanicals suite!  Kelly x

“Embossible to Resist” You …. Happy Anniversary!

If there was an award for the worst blog post pun of the year – this might win it!

I try to think of quirky things to call my blog posts to keep it interesting, but this one made me groan out loud.  Then it was too good (bad) to ‘resist’.  Oh dear!

The title is a play on the emboss resist background (and ‘impossible to resist’… just in case my sense of humour is too quirky for you!), here is Mr P’s wedding anniversary card…

Emboss Resist Love Bug Anniversary Card - featuring Beautiful Ride, Number of Years and Kinda Ecletic stamp sets together with Color Me Irresistible Specialty DSP. Kelly Kent - mypapercraftjourney.com. Funnily enough, Stampin’ Up! aren’t shy of a few quirky titles themselves.  The spotty background is from the Color Me Irresitible Specialty DSP pack which has 6 sheets of white/clear emboss resist papers and 6 sheets of coloured/clear embossed papers.  They are super cool – ready for you to add your own touch.

To create my background, I selected the white/clear spotty design and stamped the Kinda Eclectic sun in Hello Honey.  I then sponged Blushing Bride ink over the sun image and Pool Party ink around it, making sure to overlap the colours a bit and get a purple tinge as well.  I love the end result!  I don’t do much sponging – but I should!  It’s lots of fun!

The Love Bug is from the Beautiful Ride stamp set (can you beleive this is the first time I have inked it up!  Don’t worry, it’ll be getting lots more use!), stamped on to the recently available Perfectly Artistic Sale-A-Bration DSP.

And that lovely senitment is from the Number of Years stamp set.

Happy Anniversary Mr P!  It might be a week late, but I’m told that love is patient & kind!  Kelly x
