A Happy Hello – Three Ways

Making cards can be a time consuming process – hours spent trawling Pinterest, selecting stamps & colours, deciding on a layout!  And that’s all before the hands-on process even starts!

I’ve got three simple tips that will help you speed up the process and give you amazing cards:

  1. Steal your colour combinations from your favourite DSP.  Each DSP has a core set of colours used to make all 12 designs in the pack.  Find the list in the catalogue, on the cardboard in the pack or on my DSP Pinterest Board.  Or, if you’re like me – choose the colours you see in the DSP.  I don’t know how they do it, but most of the SU! colours coordinate with each other, no matter the combination.
  2. Start with a design and tweak from there to create more.  For these cards, I created one of the cards then made the other two by changing the layout just slightly.
  3. Make in multiples.  If you make a card that you think you’re going to like – make 2, 3, 4…  Or make the same card with different sentiments (happy birthday, hello, thank you).  Very soon you’ll build up a nice little stash of cards.  What to do with extra cards?  Give sets away as presents, sell them or donate them.

So, here is the result of my speedy card making session using the steal & tweak theory:

It also helps to use products you love, so I’ll make this tip #4 – if you love it, use it!  Kelly x

Murder Mystery 1950s style

Last night we attended a murder mystery birthday party.  What a lot of fun!  Mr Papercraft was “Mark” – a internationally best selling crime author who also doubled as a CIA agent!  I was “Maria” – Mark’s supportive wife.  We got dressed up in 50s style party outfits and worked hard to solve the mystery of David’s murder.

Mark & Maria

This was the cake I made for the occasion (safe to say I’m a better card maker than cake maker!!!).

The murder mystery card I made to go with the group present.

In case you were wondering , it was the scheming governor Johnny who killed David!  It appears David knew just a little too much about Johnny’s dodgy dealings!  Kelly x

Choose Love!

My Facebook feed this weekend has been taken over by the amazing news that the US supreme court has ruled in favour of same-sex marrige in all 50 states in America.  A decision I think that has been a long time coming.  If only the Australian government could show the same maturity and stop the discrimination cycle in Australia!  #chooselove.

So, with this theme in mind, my card for today is a celebration of love that involves everyone – no matter of your gender, race, religion or beliefs.

It uses the Just Add Ink 268 sketch:

Stampin’ Up! head office has also issued a creative challenge – create a project using at least two of the four punches listed below:

Pansy Punch

Now we know I {LOVE} my punches… and what’s more perfect for heart punches than a #chooselove theme?

imageBest wishes to all the couples in America who will be saying “I do” over the next year.  Looking forward to the day when all Australians can do the same!  [rant over!]. Kelly x

Baby Typography JAI267

Over the past couple of months I’ve had some requests for baby cards.  I’ve been loving creating  designs that mimic the subway art theme, which is one expression of typography.  What is ‘typography’?  According to Wikipedia:

Typography is the art and technique of arranging type to make written language readable and appealing. The arrangement of type involves selecting typefaces, point size, line length, line-spacing (leading), letter-spacing (tracking), and adjusting the space within letters pairs (kerning).

I love playing around with wording, fonts, letter sizing & colours. I’m forever downloading fonts that I like.  Font Squirrel and dafont are two of my favourite websites!

The first two cards I am sharing with you are creations that I made for friends to give to new babies they know.  I love the personalised result, the visual layout and creating not just a card, but a keepsake too.  Of course, I had some help from my Cameo for these projects.

When Di Barnes added “typography” to this week’s Just Add Ink challenge, it was a great excuse to pull the theme out again and create a personalised baby card for baby Hugo who was born to a friend of mine earlier in the week.

This one is simpler than the two above because I wanted to include the elephant which matched the onsie I decorated for him.

The elephant you see in the card above is actually made of fabric and ironed on  to the card – something I’ve never done before but adds some great texture.

I’ve played with the font size, colour & spacing to make it bold.  I suspect this little man is going to have a great impact on the world.

Welcome to baby Hugo and congratulations to his proud parents. This is the start of an amazing journey for the three of you!  Kelly x

Mermaid Magic!

Today we are celebrating Sophie’s 4th birthday – with a mermaid themed party.  It’s been a while between kids birthday parties, so it was fun to get back into ‘theme’ mode and create – a mermaid card!

With all the specific angles & shapes, mermaids are a tad tricky to do with punch art.  So, I’ve gone with a hybrid Cameo & traditional papercraft card.  The mermaid is so cute, but most of all I wanted to show off some of my favourites from the new catalogue:

  1. Tin of Cards stamp set.  I {LOVE} the font and styling of the main sentiments in this stamp set.  Not only can you use it to complete your Tin of Cards project kit, but it will be a set that will be on high rotation for other cards that you make.
  2. Tags & Labels framelits set.  Ok, so I {LOVE} these too!  There are 6 sizes of tags and 6 sizes of square frames which layer tightly together, giving you the perfect option for framed sentiments.
  3. Whisper White Thick A4 Cardstock. The same colour & quality as the usual Whisper White card, but thicker!!!  Great for card bases & 3D projects.  A great addition to the SU! range.

I ended up making 2 mermaid cards (because they were so cute!).  One in colours to match the party invite and one in a variation of that.

And of course, I can’t decide which one I like best.

Happy birthday mermaid Sophie!  Kelly & your mermaid friends x
